Fire-Roasted Orange, Applewood Smoke, and the Packages That Can’t Travel Yet

It was late by the time we finished up in the warehouse.
On days like that, I’ll make myself a simple whisky drink. Not for filming, not to test a recipe — just to let the day slow down.
Tonight there was only one orange on the table 🍊.
I didn’t slice it right away. I held the whole orange over the flame and let the peel warm slowly. The scent changes first — not the bright citrus you expect, but something deeper and warmer.
Fire changes a fruit’s personality.
The natural sugars begin to open up, the peel darkens slightly, and once it cools down a bit, I cut it open and gently crush it with a spoon. The juice carries a roasted sweetness with a soft bitterness at the edge.
Then a few dashes of bitters.
Bitters are quiet, but they shape the drink. They don’t take over — they give the glass structure.
Then ice. Then bourbon whisky 🥃.
The vanilla and oak of the bourbon connect naturally with the roasted orange. Citrus sweetness, herbal bitters, and warm whisky begin to settle into each other.
And finally, a touch of smoke.
I used applewood fruitwood smoking chips from a small whiskey smoker kit — only about five seconds of smoke. Applewood is soft and gentle. It doesn’t overpower the orange; it simply lifts the roasted aroma and turns the drink into a quiet smoked Old Fashioned style cocktail.
When the smoke clears, the aroma becomes layered.
The first sip brings warm citrus. Then the vanilla and oak from the bourbon. Let it sit for a moment, and what remains is a faint applewood smoke and a soft caramel note.
People sometimes think the Old Fashioned is a fixed recipe.
But it never really was.
From the beginning, it has always been a drink that moves. The sweet element can change, the bitters can change, the fruit can change. Orange, apple, even strawberry — when fire and fruitwood smoke meet whisky, every smoked cocktail develops its own personality.
I’ve always thought fire and smoke are quiet tools.
A little fire can transform a fruit.
A little smoke can transform a glass of whisky.
Sometimes it doesn’t need to be complicated.
An orange.
A flame.
Five seconds of applewood smoke.
And a glass of whisky.
That’s enough.
There’s something else I’ve been thinking about recently.
We currently can’t ship a few orders to Israel. It’s not about inventory — it’s simply the reality of logistics right now. Some routes are paused.
When I see those orders, I still click into them for a moment — the name, the city, the address.
Sometimes I imagine the person who placed it. Maybe they saw a video late at night and wanted to try making a smoked whisky drink at home.
But some packages can’t reach them yet.
After doing this for a while, you begin to understand that these boxes travel far. Our whiskey smoker kits ship across the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, and many other places.
Different homes. Different evenings. Different stories.
Sometimes a glass of whisky and a thin ribbon of smoke is a very ordinary thing.
But when the world becomes complicated, you start to appreciate the simple rituals.
An orange, a flame, applewood smoke, and a glass of whisky.
That kind of night is quiet.
I hope the packages that can’t travel today will move again soon.
